Cocoa/Kakaw... I recently was asked
the question....Why is there an image of a fish in the
word for cocoa or chocolate? The language
of the maya was created over time from the verbal to
the written as in all languages. The written language
as well evolved over the centuries of Maya rule. The
word for fish is "ka"......I presume the word for fish
occurred in the verbal form very early on. At any rate when
written language was invented by the maya....early on
pictographs were used for the words therefore a drawing
of a fish was used for the word "ka.... or fish".
The Maya had invented the word "kakaw...cocoa"
to describe the plant or it's useful seeds or beans.
When the early scribes wrote the word "ka...Kaw"...it
was probably convenient to use the image of a fish "ka"
to represent the first syllable of the word "ka...kaw"...there
are other glyphs to represent the word cocoa or chocolate. It's interesting
that our word for cocoa apparently came directly from
the maya word "kakaw"...as cocoa is indigenous
of the "new world" and brought to Europe by
the early spanish explorers.. Once writing came
to be used....it didn't take long before pictographs
weren't suitable for many sounds and other symbols took
the place of sounds just as we use letters (symbols)
for sounds rather than pictographs....the maya created
their own set of symbols or glyphs to represent sounds.
Just as any language that is in use is in a dynamic
state, the verbal and written language of the Maya changed
over the centuries of the Classic Maya era. There are
often therefore many depictions of written language
that differ from place to place and time to time.

The
Birth Glyph The name glyphs of newborn follow the birth glyph. This glyph on the left is known as the upended frog. A frog head facing upward. While a frog may or may not have been what the maya meant to represent, frogs are unique in that a human can witness the development of the frog from fertile egg to adult in a short period of time and is often used as a symbol for fertility and birth in many cultures. I can engrave the name and birthdate of newborn on the reverse of this glyph. A parent can wear this glyph while saving it for the child. I found this glyph in a decipherment reading by Linda Schele, UT Austin of Stelae 3 from Piedras Negras. ($42)(bottom left)...with copper background as shown on the right..There is a silver disc soldered to the backside where I engrave the info...($58) plus postage.... U Kab Panamil (Touch the Earth) also represent "to be born" and can be used as well to represent birth. In sterling silver $45...each available in gold. |
